Apple Dominates Even In Seattle With 81% Market Share
Wed, May 16th 2012 6:10a   David Hablewitz
I have been extremely busy lately, spending much of my time working on preparing for the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification exam (which I passed on Friday!), taking a class on entrepreneurship and small business management, and working on applying this knowledge in a practical way, at the sacrifice of my blog and sleep. But I thought I would take a quick break from my break to drop a few links for my MacFriends and to illustrate just how much this region is just like everywhere [read] Keywords: apple facebook microsoft mobile twitter

Microsoft hires Lotus Professionals for Cloud Computing at Office 365
Fri, Apr 6th 2012 12:10a   David Hablewitz
That’s right.  You read the headline correctly.  I’m not the only Lotus professional working on the Office 365 project.  My friend, a fellow Lotus professional just joined the team.  Surprisingly, I didn’t know anything about it until a week before he started.  Now you might be asking yourself:  “What would Microsoft need Lotus professionals for?”  No, it has nothing to do with things like mail migrations.  It’s all about BlackBerry Enterprise Servers [read] Keywords: lotus notes blackberry email enterprise facebook google microsoft office twitter

Viruses Happen
Mon, Feb 13th 2012 2:12p   David Hablewitz
The good news:  I still have never had a computer get infected with an email virus while using Lotus Notes.  That 18-year run is still going. The bad news:  My laptop got a virus through a random act of browsing.  It happened thanks to a touch pad strategically located between the palms of the hands where it can occasionally cause the mouse to move or misread a mouse click.  It has happened many times in the past.  I’m typing away when suddenly the cursor jumps to somewhere else on t [read] Keywords: lotus notes email facebook laptop twitter virus

How to have your own Grand Canyon Expedition: Grand Canyon 2013 Main Lottery is Open and Accepting Applications
Wed, Feb 1st 2012 10:12a   David Hablewitz
As you read this tale do you wish you could have your own experience rafting the Grand Canyon?  It’s easier to get there than you might think.  Yes, you can take the easier, more expensive route of going on a professionally guided trip.  But doing your own private trip has an element of risk and excitement that you won’t feel if you have guides that have been down hundreds of times.  A private trip is truly an expedition.  Yes, there are significant logistics involved and you [read] Keywords: applications email facebook office password twitter

BlackBerry Business Cloud Services: The truth behind the story from one who knows
Tue, Jan 31st 2012 11:12p   David Hablewitz
There is a lot of talk going around about BlackBerry Business Cloud Services  on various blogs:  Paul Farris’ Blog   Volker Weber’s blog First, let me say, unless you work(ed) for Microsoft or RIM, this is totally irrelevant and transparent.  BlackBerry support has been available with Office365 for years.  The big deal here is that RIM finally finished their cloud solution which was code-named “Contrail”.  This has been long in the making.  It’s not insider [read] Keywords: domino bes blackberry enterprise exchange exchange facebook microsoft rim twitter

Tue, Jan 31st 2012 5:11a   David Hablewitz
In my May 30, 2011 post I explained that I had started a project at Microsoft where I would be working with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) team in Office365 to improve the process for building the BES servers, streamlining the process, reducing the bugs, and clarifying the instructions for the build team.  Well that project has come to completion and the results were fantastic.  We accomplished everything we set out to do and I made some great new friends in the process. Today is a layover day.  That means we’re staying here for another night to relax and catch up on things. First the injury report:  Elizabeth cut her elbow 3 days ago.  She thinks she cut it on the oar when they ran the hole (hydraulic) in Badger Rapid.  Now it is swollen and is probably infected.  If it is and we don’t have anti-biotics, we may be looking at an airlift.  I plan to at least use the satellite phone and make a call for medical advice. OK, I’ll tell you right up front.  I now work at Microsoft.  No, I’m not throwing away 17 years of experience with Lotus software.  I’m just taking on new challenges and developing other skills. This new challenge will involve BlackBerry, Exchange and much more. I am following my own mantra:  “Eliminate your weaknesses and turn them into strengths.”  (Read my recent post on this.) WOW! An IBM Sametime ad via Google Ad seen while viewing a youtube.com video!
Sat, May 28th 2011 12:11a   David Hablewitz
Sametime ad in youtube.com video Check out the banner ad in this screenshot of a youtube video. It was served up to me by Google while I was watching a whitewater video on youtube.com. Could this be part of a REAL advertising campaign showing a REAL product?! It isn’t exactly obvious what in the ad what the product is or does, but it’s getting the Lotus brand in front of people. Hopefully the ad selector doesn’t just show it to people who already know Lotus. Don’t get to [read] Keywords: ibm lotus sametime facebook google twitter

140ConfNW Speech Transcript: Using Your Social Media Network to Make You a Genius
Sun, May 22nd 2011 10:11p   David Hablewitz
On May 19, the 140 Characters Conference was hosted in Vancouver, WA. The focus of this conference was on social media and how it fits into business. The format is unique and in my opinion, brilliant. Rather than having a bunch of breakout sessions and hour-long speeches saturated with hundreds of Powerpoint slides, the audience was kept in one venue and blasted with short 10-minute presentations in rapid-fire succession. Time was managed with great precision. Due to the short time permitted for [read] Keywords: connections ibm lotusphere facebook linkedin network profile twitter

IBM could learn a lot about marketing from Harold Camping
Sat, May 21st 2011 6:11p   David Hablewitz
Whether his prediction comes true is irrelevant.  Harold Camping has done a phenomenal job of marketing the Rapture.  For the price of a few minutes worth of Superbowl commercials, he has created a very successful marketing campaign that has drawn the attention of much of the 1st world.  What’s more, when it doesn’t happen, HE WILL GAIN EVEN MORE FOLLOWERS!!!  Mark my words, this will happen. So if one man could sell his idea so successfully to the world, why can’t IBM, own [read] Keywords: ibm lotus apple facebook google microsoft mobile twitter

The dirty little secret hiding in your Domino Directory
Fri, May 20th 2011 1:10p   David Hablewitz
Your Domino directory may be filled with the Lotus Notes equivalent of bedbugs and you would never know it. They appear in the form of documents that don’t belong, but don’t appear in any views. Occasionally, someone with rights to create documents in your directory will accidentally click paste or Ctrl-V when they shouldn’t have. Perhaps they were in the wrong database when they did it or maybe they meant to cut or copy instead of paste and the clipboard happened to have a Not [read] Keywords: admin domino lotus notes database facebook twitter

Here is a work of brilliance. I just received an email announcing an IBM roadshow event in Seattle. While it isn’t specifically about Lotus software, it covers Websphere and cloud computing. Here it is: http://www-01.ibm.com/software/websphere/events/impact/icty_events.html The brilliance is that it’s only a week away. Too bad, I already have plans and now it’s too late to change them. Turning Your Weakness into a Strength
Sat, May 7th 2011 9:10p   David Hablewitz
This article is based on a speech I gave at Toastmasters. A few years ago, I entered a multi-sport race that involved a 25-mile mountain biking leg, a 12-mile kayaking leg, and a 6-mile run.  In preparation for the race I biked to work 40 miles round trip, 3 to 5 days/week.  I paddled 2 to 3 times/week.  I didn’t do any running because I didn’t like to run and I was already cycling which also trains the legs, or so I thought. What is MTBF?  It stands for Mean Time Between Failures.  That’s a statistical term for describing how often your servers go down and for how long.  In this case, it is also the name of a tool that captures vital information about every time a server is shut down or crashes anywhere in your environment.  It tracks when it went down and for how long.  It does this automatically whether you remember to post a change in change control or not.  It even has a place to post comments about [read] Keywords: acl domino ibm ldd nd7 notes ntf R5 application database facebook ideajam ideajam.net network server twitter widget

Software Suicide: Microsoft’s hangs itself with “Why Migrations Instead of In-Place Upgrades?”
