ibm.com: IDC White Paper - The Future of Mail is Social
Fri, Feb 17th 2012 9:40a   Ed Brill
IBM has just posted a new white paper on the evolution of email, written by IDC analyst Michael Fauscette. The paper discusses the history of email, how companies are viewing email in the context of collaboration and social business, and then takes a converged view of the future of email and its evolution into a social business tool. Social mail consideration and adoption are then discussed. As social collaboration tools become more available and are deployed to more employees, some companies a [read] Keywords: collaboration ibm email enterprise

Changes to my March+April schedule
Sun, Feb 12th 2012 5:11p   Ed Brill
In a previous blog entry announcing last week's trip to Germany, I also mentioned plans to visit the Business Gets Social roadshow in Taiwan in March, and a possible stop at the Belgian Lotus User Group (BLUG). Well, a personal conflict came up around that timeframe, and I had to back out of both. Instead.... I will be keynoting the 2nd Australian Lotus User Group (AusLUG) on 29/30 March in Melbourne. Information Week: Jive CEO: Social Tools Are Essential, Not Extras
Wed, Feb 8th 2012 1:55p   Ed Brill
We agree in principle... Social software is the best way for organizations to organize "their single biggest investment, which for most companies is their people," [Jive CEO Tony Zingale] said. "They must adopt social business strategy or risk falling behind their competitors."Couldn't have said it better ourselves. However, I'm surprised where he goes from there: IBM Connections is the "refurbished Lotus email system"Um, OK. Wired: Clive Thompson on Analog Designs in the Digital Age
Tue, Feb 7th 2012 2:00p   Ed Brill
On my flight over to Europe this week, I read Clive Thompson's column and was intrigued:When we get to the last week of February, open your Google Calendar and choose the Month view. You'll see the previous three weeks grayed out. Only the next few days will be "active." If you want to see what you've got planned for more than the next couple of days, you have to flip forward to March. Just after Lotusphere, IBM released Lotus Symphony 3.0.1. This new version of Symphony features several incremental enhancements and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the OpenOffice-based desktop productivity market. In my earlier blog entry, I indicated that our energy around the next release of Symphony is combining with the open-source community around the Apache OpenOffice project. Dominoplus introduces D+ Everywhere
Mon, Jan 30th 2012 7:31a   Ed Brill
When I was in Spain last fall for the ESLUG event, I met Alejandro and the team from Dominoplus. They were excited to show me their "D+ Everywhere" application, which uses XPages to deliver offline mobile applications over HTML5. Specifically, IBM called out the intention to support Nokia and HTC devices on Notes Traveler. IBM’s 2011 Tech Trends report
Tue, Nov 15th 2011 7:20a   Ed Brill
Hot off the presses this morning is IBM's 2011 Tech Trends report. More than 4000 IT professionals from all over the world -- 93 countries -- participated in the survey. The results cover a wide range of topics, including analytics, mobile, cloud, and social -- a buzzword bingo! Sametime on iOS - pilot testing
Fri, Nov 11th 2011 9:36a   Ed Brill
It's been no secret that we are working on an installed IBM Sametime application for iOS, just as we have recently shipped one for Android. I had the opportunity earlier this week to spend a full day working from the internal pilot of Sametime on iOS. Short summary -- great app, well-designed. As you can see in the screen shot, I was only working over 3G, not wifi. The speed and responsiveness was just fine. Computerworld: IBM opens up smartphone, tablet support for its workers

Really good article about IBM's approach to mobile devices and tablets. The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend is fully in play, while respecting need for corporate governance and security. Android and iOS quickly emerging as the two mainstream platforms, though 30,000 IBMers (like me) are using Blackberry (of course, I have an iPad as well...).... Most-frequently asked question this week -- when are the language versions of Notes/Domino 8.5.3 coming? IBM doesn't pre-announce the release dates for a variety of reasons. CNNMoney: IBM CEO Palmisano to step down
Tue, Oct 25th 2011 4:10p   Ed Brill
The headline is a little mis-leading, since Palmisano remains as Chairman, but Ginni Rometty moves up to CEO and President, as announced today by IBM. What I like about this article is this: Palmisano's tenure was an extremely successful one: After taking the tech giant's reins from Lou Gerstner in 2002, Palmisano transformed the company from a systems and services firm into a supercomputing and analytics mega-machine. Admittedly, even for me, last week was a little wearying. I've already written about ESLUGsphere in Madrid and the business partner summit in Wroclaw, which were the two main reasons for last week's European visit. I rounded out the week with a visit to Cardiff, Wales, finally completing a tour of the United Kingdom. Though I was only on Welsh soil for 18 hours, I made sure to tick a few boxes -- including some sightseeing of famous vistas that had been used in the filming of Doctor Who. Getting ready for an Italian DDive
Mon, Jun 27th 2011 1:17p   Ed Brill
It's hard to believe we're already at the halfway point in 2011. It feels like just yesterday we were leaving Lotusphere and off and running. I'm very excited about my next trip to Europe later this week. This weekend, I'll be speaking at the annual "DDive" event of the Italian Notes/Domino user community, DominoPoint.IT. What is DDive? It's a user group, a networking event, and a social event all in one -- Italian style. The DominoPoint guys have been after me for years to get t [read] Keywords: domino lotusphere notes application community networking

Moments ago at Admin2011, I had the privilege to announce the 2011 crop of IBM Champions for Lotus Software and IBM Collaboration Solutions. These fifty represent strong evangelists, community contributors, knowledge sharers, and all around good people from the Lotus community worldwide. We received many more nominations than we had slots available for Champions, so being selected represents real IBM recognition of your efforts. Quick hits from PACLUG
Wed, Jun 22nd 2011 1:08a   Ed Brill
Just some quick observations from today's successful PACLUG event in Las Vegas. Thank you to David Stephens for being the energy behind this event, and to many others including the WISPubs/View staff, Brian Benz, Jon Raslawski, Ann Marie Darrough, Holli Heard, etc. for making it all work. Very good discussion in my Notes/Domino strategy session today, including good brainstorming for a working name for the Notes "Next" release I really enjoy the interactive forum of a session like that whe [read] Keywords: admin domino lotus notes traveler xpages application bleedyellow bleedyellow.com database email iphone mobile openntf password

"Like" me on Facebook
Fri, Jun 17th 2011 7:16a   Ed Brill
Earlier this week, I took a step in the direction away from "profersonal" (a term my professional/personal friend Jason Seiden has coined) and set up a separate Facebook page for, well, me. Me as in Ed Brill, Director, Messaging and Collaboration, IBM Software Solutions, as opposed to me--opinionated father, photographer, hobby writer for Highland Park Patch, etc. I have been a huge believer for two decades in living life online. I share personal milestones about my family, my hobbies, and [read] Keywords: collaboration ibm blogging facebook profile twitter

IBM turns 100, reflecting on my 16%
Wed, Jun 15th 2011 12:23a   Ed Brill
This morning, IBM is celebrating it's centennial -- one hundred years in the technology business. It happens to basically coincide with my own 17th anniversary, although technically as far as actually being an IBMer, that started a year after I joined Lotus. So for fair math let's say I've been part of IBM for 16% of its lifespan, which is way more than the two years I thought I would spend at Lotus before moving on to a new opportunity. Much will be written this week about IBM turning 100 [read] Keywords: agent ibm lotus notes community

Notes Traveler 8.5.2.3 - now with partial wipe! (and 8.5.3 preview)
Mon, Jun 13th 2011 2:23p   Ed Brill
On Friday, IBM released an updated 8.5.2 version of Notes Traveler server, with serviceability updates and one new feature -- partial wipe. This is:By popular demand, the Lotus Notes Traveler team has added a data only wipe option for Apple devices in the 8.5.2.3 and later releases. Previously, the only option for wipe of an Apple device was a full hard reset of the device. Many Administrators are not comfortable with hard resting a device that has been purchased by the end user. Fourth release of LotusLive Notes is live today
Tue, Jun 7th 2011 1:03p   Ed Brill
Earlier this morning, we announced the availability of the fourth release of LotusLive Notes. The new release is primarily designed around quality improvement, but adds some new features for customized mail routing, additional language support for LotusLive Notes Traveler, and additional monitoring capabilities. As I've commented on before, I'm pleased and impressed with our engineering and delivery team's ability to turn the crank rapidly on new releases, true to the model of software as [read] Keywords: domino ibm notes notes client traveler applications exchange exchange google integration

Domino Express - Unintended Consequences
Mon, Jun 6th 2011 9:53p   Ed Brill
Earlier tonight, a business partner blogged about different ways that small businesses could refactor their Domino licensing to take advantage of the changes my team and I have made in Domino Collaboration Express licensing over the last few months. The blog entry is a good encapsulation of a part of my strategy presentation over the last few months -- in short, that it appears I over-steered in listening to the community on needed changes in Domino Express that may have resulted in putting cust [read] Keywords: collaboration domino ibm notes application community enterprise server

Help - new Notes/Domino Wiki page to list Domino hosting providers
Thu, Jun 2nd 2011 1:04p   Ed Brill
This is what a wiki is for. I asked my team to compile a list of the xSPs who provide Domino hosting services globally. Because of the highly distributed nature of IBM's channel relationships, this turned out to be harder to do than I had hoped. Never mind the complexity, though, we have technology and humans who can solve the challenge. We put up a wiki page on the Notes/Domino wiki to compile a list of all the Domino hosting providers. At V1, it only has US, Japan, Sweden, and Canadian [read] Keywords: domino ibm ldd lotus notes notesdomino wiki
