Connections 3.0.1.1 and Sametime Proxy Server 8.5.2 IFR1 fix OBEN-8SDLGS – RECALLED
Tue, Mar 27th 2012 7:12a   Victor Toal
I just got a mail from IBM support on the Sametime Proxy Server 8.5.2 IFR1 fix OBEN-8SDLGS that is mandatory for awareness between Connections 3.0.1 FP1 and Sametime.  It appears this HF was recalled (not sure what he exact problem is) which explains why I have not been able to get awareness to work with Connections 3.0.1.1 – no mater what I do. Bosch opts for IBM Connections software – automotiveIT International
Fri, Mar 16th 2012 9:13a   Victor Toal
Interesting article – shows that Connections is more and more in demand not only in the US but also internationally. I find that some of my clients go the “Social Software” route to “get rid of email”  which is one way of saying they want their people to spend less time in their mail in-boxes and more time being productive and sharing knowledge. Connectria – nice touch
Wed, Nov 16th 2011 7:11a   Victor Toal
As I mentioned a while ago I am now a proud client of Connectria and have one of my serves hosted with them in their cloud – Nirvana-land, nobody knows where it really floats. It is a CentOS server and it came pre-configured with SELinux (well, that is a given) but also with logwatch turned on and set to send mail. Saved me the effort to set it up myself, all I had to do is edit the /usr/share/logwatch/default.conf/logwatch.conf  file and change the sender and recipient address for the lo [read] Keywords: domino centos facebook server smtp twitter

Lotus Notes 8.5.2 code error – The Tale of Regression
Wed, Nov 9th 2011 7:11a   Victor Toal
I am part of a Domino migration at a large client in the financial/insurance industry and we have been moving applications from Domino 6.5.5 to version 8.5.2 FP1. I know, there are newer versions out there but you can’t always upgrade blindly – this is going to be one of the stories why IN-DEPTH testing is so important. The client has an application that has been around since R5 days, migrated and upgraded several times – both client and server versions and never an issue. Just a short post for some news. I live in the North East and the winter storm hit us in Connecticut full force and I was out of power for 7 days. along with the power being out for private citizens it also affected most businesses in the state and I lost my mail server for a while. So, I decided to finally create a back-up environment on a waaaaaaaay different part of the grid. I’ll keep it brief – short cuts will kill you. I am on a Domino migration project where we are moving the client from 6.5.6 to 8.5.2. We are not upgrading servers but creating a whole new server environment on new virtual servers and will be moving applications over in phases. No mail, they moved to Exchange years ago. DCLug Meeting – 09/23/2010
Fri, Sep 17th 2010 10:29a   Victor Toal
I have been working for a client full time in DC for a few months now and some members of the DC Lug are at the same place – so after some beating and whipping by them I joined the DC Lotus User Group a month ago or do (it still hurts …) Now, for the first time in a while (should I take credit??) there will be a DCLug meeting on Sept. 23 3-5. The meeting details are here. There is also a DC Lotus Professionals group on LinkedIn that I think is a great resource to join as well. Domino on Linux series: Ubuntu
Fri, Sep 17th 2010 9:27a   Victor Toal
I usually try to avoid just re-hashing content somebody else put out there, I like to post less but be relevant. however, it is time to introduce one of my favorite websites … Ubuntu Geek. This site is great, I have it in my feed and there is not a day when there is not something new I learn or get reminded of a unique use of something that I might know of but had never considered alternative usage for. Today I came across this one: Tip:How to restore accidently deleted top panel in ubuntu [read] Keywords: domino desktop facebook google linux twitter ubuntu

Domino 8.5.2 with SMTP HF is in
Thu, Sep 9th 2010 8:27a   Victor Toal
Finally! I spent all of 25 minutes yesterday to upgrade my main Domino server to 8.5.2 with the new HF for SMTP that came out yesterday. I waited on this fix and all I can say is that the upgrade (from 8.5.1 FP4) was quick, simple and even the old HW that my server runs on had no issue with it. What took the longest was the download of the Domino install (15 minutes) and everything else was quick. I do have clients that want to wait until FP1 comes out – somewhat short-sighted but I do und [read] Keywords: domino lotus notes notesdomino facebook server smtp twitter

Ubuntu – it is the way to go!
Tue, Sep 7th 2010 3:27a   Victor Toal
I wish I had listened to my buddy Bill Malchisky and switched from Red Had Desktop to Ubuntu a while ago. I had some serious Java issues on Red Hat that I did not want to work through so I just decided to go cold turkey and install  Ubuntu 10.04 and just run with with it. Since I always kept all my volatile data on a secondary disk it was rather simple, I just downladed the iso file, burned a CD and installed over the existing Red Hat installation – after popping out the data drive so I d [read] Keywords: domino desktop facebook java linux red hat twitter ubuntu

How to crash a Linux Notes client ….
Mon, Aug 16th 2010 12:31p   Victor Toal
My main OS on my private machine is Linux and I love it. I have been workign with Linux for years now and still consider myself someplace int eh steep learning curve as there is a new thing I learn every week. I also love the notes client on Linux because NOTHING “was” able to kill it – until I tried to create an update site and load in the language packs for German, French, Italian and Spanish for the new spell checker. These need to be integrated using an update site or can a [read] Keywords: domino lotus notes notes client facebook linux server twitter widget

LotusLive – some questions not asked …
Mon, Aug 16th 2010 8:40a   Victor Toal
LotusLive – IBM’s entry into the whole cloud computing and SAAS field. Arguably Domino has had this technical capability to work in “a” or “the” cloud for years though there were no buzz words attached to it and – IMHO – the market would not have been ready for the whole thought process. Though there are a few hosting companies (IBM among them, or Connectria, Promenic, …) that have made a good living servicing this need before Google and Micr [read] Keywords: domino ibm lotus notes best practice facebook google integration microsoft openntf podcast taking notes twitter

Domino: DAOS Transactional logging error – “…Log file is full” results in server hang
Thu, Aug 12th 2010 10:23a   Victor Toal
While perusing the IBM site and reviewing new technotes and SPRs I came across this one: 1440744 Basically it pertains to DAOS and transactional logging and a potential issue. The work-around is classic – call IBM and see if they can create a HF for you … wonderful. The reported SW version is 8.5 and the wording is “…is expected to be fixed in an upcoming release of Lotus Notes/Domino” so now I’ll go through the fix lists of 8.5.1 and (hopefully soon) 8.5.2 to [read] Keywords: domino ibm lotus notes facebook server twitter

New Series: The Foreign Source – Introduction
Tue, Aug 10th 2010 11:28a   Victor Toal
Something I have been planning to blog about for some time now is how there is so much Lotus related material out thre that is not being generated by US or other English sources. If you follow PlanetLotus.org you will often see non English posts pop up but what I think allot of readers of Lotus related material world-wide might not be that aware of is just how much great material there is out there if you just go and dig a bit. I am calling this new series [The foreign Source] or TFS for short ( [read] Keywords: connections ibm lotus notes planetlotus planetlotus.org twitter

Sametime Install end-to-end
Tue, Aug 10th 2010 8:31a   Victor Toal
I normally try to avoid just re-posting stuff I see in other blogs but this one merits allot of attention: The Sametime blog has a recent post that points to a really great session on how to install Sametime 8.5.1 front-to-end … and it’s long – 277 slides!! Looking at all them will take a while but it is worth the time spent. [read] Keywords: ibm lotus notes sametime sametimelotus
